Just when you thought NYC couldn’t get any tastier, a new “pop-up summer food village” has debuted at Coney Island. Erected by SG Blocks, a New York-based designer of cargotecture structures, “Coney Smorgasburg” (the younger sib of Williamsburg’s popular Smorgasburg event) is made up of 14 colorful repurposed shipping containers. The container structures, built as a complement to the Coney Art Walls event, are being used to house various food vendors serving up tasty grub for hungry beachgoers.
SG Blocks’ contribution to the Coney Art Walls event brings a touch of sustainable design to the highly-anticipated art show. “We see a great synergy between the spirit of the program in Coney Island and our product,” stated Paul Galvin, Chairman and CEO of SG Blocks. “We are happy to be working with such great companies as Thor Equities and Smorgasburg and to once again be using our containers to build an artistic, modern product. Using our container-based product is more efficient for Smorgasburg and Thor Equities than traditional construction methods. We’re helping to bring the food and drink market to life much more quickly for visitors to enjoy.”
Coney Art Walls is a public street art wall project created by Thor Equities and curated by well-known art curator and director Jeffrey Deitch. Located at 1320 Bowery Street, Coney Art Wall will see some of the most prominent street artists from all over the world creating more than 20 wall murals for the project. Deitch, a prominent figure in the art world, has called on legendary New York street artists like Lady Pink, Daze, Lee QuiƱones, and many others to paint over 25 outdoor walls.
